The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $500,000 project grant to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences (CFDA 47.049) program. The grant aims to accelerate the development of fault-tolerant quantum computing by co-designing error-correcting codes and the hardware to run them. The interdisciplinary research team at UCLA, consisting of computer scientists, engineers, physicists, and educators, will focus on identifying the most efficient quantum error-correcting codes for the trapped-ion quantum computing hardware, and optimizing their deployment on this platform. The project will also research methods to improve gate fidelities and work with commercial vendors to realize a fault-tolerant quantum computing system. Additionally, the team will convene a community of educators, industry, and government leaders to address the workforce needs in this field. This award supports the National Quantum Initiative Act and NSF's objectives in quantum information science and engineering. Subawards are planned under this grant.
