This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation (NSF), under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences (CFDA 47.049) program, provides $250,000 to the Colorado School of Mines to research and develop a process for producing sustainable liquid fuels from CO2. The key objectives are to: Generate fundamental knowledge for designing a CO2 electrolyzer to selectively produce ethylene (C2H4) based on operating conditions, catalyst design, and electrode engineering. This will improve the efficiency of CO2 utilization in the electrolyzer. Demonstrate the use of rapid temperature cycling in a "Joule reactor" to desorb strongly bound intermediates on catalytic surfaces, preventing coke formation and enabling better utilization of renewable electricity for chemical processes. The project will leverage ongoing programs at the Colorado School of Mines and the University of Cincinnati to provide research opportunities for undergraduate students. Outcomes will include protocols to quantify the advantages of Joule heating for a range of chemical processes and new ways to produce sustainable chemicals from CO2. The award period is from April 1, 2025 to March 31, 2027.
