This National Science Foundation (NSF) Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) award provides $335,327 to the University of California San Diego (UCSD) Scripps Institution of Oceanography to measure the deformation of the seafloor off Kilauea Volcano in Hawaii over a 4-year period. The project will deploy a network of 4 GNSS-acoustic sites on the submarine south flank of Kilauea to track horizontal displacement rates along the Kilauea décollement fault, as well as reoccupy benchmarks to determine 20-year vertical deformation. This research will improve understanding of the fault's geometry, seismic and aseismic slip processes, and stress transfer, ultimately enhancing seismic and tsunami hazard assessments for Hawaii and subduction zone regions. The project will also train a graduate student and contribute to community outreach and education efforts.
