The National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Materials Research awarded a $640,000 project grant to Iowa State University of Science and Technology to conduct fundamental research on developing new sodium-based mixed glass former (MGF) mixed oxy-sulfide-nitride (MOSN) glassy solid electrolytes (GSEs). The 4-year project will explore the hypothesis that high Na+ ion conductivity GSEs can be created by studying the materials chemistry of mixing silicon and phosphorous glass formers with oxygen, sulfur, and nitrogen anions. This research aims to enable the development of Na-based all-solid-state batteries that are safer and more energy-dense than current lithium-ion batteries. The project will also train graduate and undergraduate students in advanced glass synthesis, materials characterization, and solid-state electrochemistry to develop a pipeline of new expertise in energy storage technologies.
