This National Science Foundation (NSF) Biological Sciences program (CFDA 47.074) Project Grant award of $324,887 to Saint Louis University is funding the development of novel tools to analyze vibrational acoustic scenes, known as "vibroscapes." The research team will use existing recordings of vibroscapes across different grassland sites to develop artificial intelligence approaches for automating vibrational sound analysis. This will enable testing of ecological and evolutionary hypotheses about when and how insects use vibrational communication, as well as the potential impacts of anthropogenic change on animal communities. The project aims to provide unprecedented insight into animal acoustic communication and behavior, while making the vibrational analysis tools freely available to the scientific community to expand access to the study of biotremology. The project period runs from September 1, 2024 to August 31, 2027 and includes plans for subawards.
