This $119,779 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) will support a collaborative research project to reconcile geophysical observations of slow slip and tremor with geologic and rheological constraints in subduction zones. The primary objectives are to: (1) investigate the types of rocks that potentially hosted slow slip and tremor by analyzing mineral composition, ages, chemistry, and deformation; and (2) compare the rock record to geophysical imaging of modern subduction zones by modeling the geophysical signature of these rocks. The project involves extensive international collaboration and aims to train graduate and undergraduate students as well as a postdoctoral scholar. It also includes the development of yearly workshops on seismic properties, rheology/deformation, and geochronology/geochemistry for the project participants, with the resulting scientific/methodological resources made publicly available to the subduction zone research community. The award has a performance period from January 15, 2025 to December 31, 2027, and the University of Washington is the sole awardee with no planned sub-awards.
