This Project Grant award of $199,199.00 from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences (CFDA 47.075) program aims to assist researchers, ecological restoration practitioners, and community partners in navigating ethical and responsible co-authorship when working with Indigenous partners. The project, co-led by non-tribal university scholars and Blackfoot scholars and partners including 5 tribal elders and the Piikani Lodge nonprofit, will: 1) identify obstacles and best practices for ethical co-authorship, 2) develop models of collaboration that enable ethical and effective co-authorship, and 3) specifically examine what ethical co-authorship looks like in ecological restoration research. The project will produce guidelines for best practices in ethical co-authorship, provide co-authorship opportunities for Blackfoot partners and students, and generate co-written outputs applying different models of co-authorship to support Blackfoot-led ecological restoration. A $24,919 subaward to the Piikani Lodge Health Institute will coordinate community engagement, support Blackfoot student interns, and help produce Blackfoot-led research outputs.
