This $203,901 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) supports the development of an AI-enhanced mobile learning system that helps civil and construction engineering students integrate their everyday observations with formal engineering education. The project aims to design, develop, and test a transformative learning platform that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to serve as an on-demand educator, guiding students' attention to relevant construction components, explaining observations, and linking them to course materials. The system will operate on affordable smartphones and incorporate features to promote equity and accessibility, such as color vision deficiency support and audio narrations. The proposed AI-enhanced teaching and learning approach will be implemented and empirically evaluated in multiple undergraduate construction engineering courses to assess its effectiveness on student learning outcomes and perceptions. This early-stage exploratory research project has a performance period from September 2024 to August 2027 and is funded through the NSF's Research on Innovative Technologies for Enhanced Learning (RITEL) program.
