The University of Iowa received a $430,000 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Mathematical and Physical Sciences (MPS) program to conduct collaborative research on the structure and dynamics of ionic liquids. Professors Claudio Margulis and Andrew Nieuwkoop, along with their research teams, will use a combination of advanced nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques, scattering, and computer simulations to investigate the intra- and inter-ionic dynamics of selected ionic liquids. This 3-year project aims to shed light on fundamental phenomena such as ion movement and recently discovered liquid-liquid phase transitions in ionic liquids. The research findings could impact our understanding of transport phenomena and lead to new applications. The project will also engage students from community colleges, graduate programs, and postdoctoral researchers, as well as foster scientific exchanges at conferences and symposia.
