This National Science Foundation (NSF) Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) Project Grant award to Northeastern University totaling $531,056 will fund research to advance the fundamental mechanics of frictional mechanical metamaterials (FMMs). The objective is to develop new concepts, methodologies, and tools to leverage FMMs for applications in areas such as protective materials, energy materials, soft robotics, and seismic engineering. The project will make contributions across theoretical, experimental, and numerical aspects by bridging mechanics, materials science, and additive manufacturing at macro and micro/nano scales. Key planned activities include advancing the understanding of friction under complex conditions, exploring mechanical behaviors of engaging key-channel pairs, and generating internal friction through auxeticity. Prototypes will be fabricated via 3D printing, and the research findings will be disseminated through customized STEM education activities focused on attracting and retaining underrepresented students in mechanical engineering.
