This National Science Foundation (NSF) Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) Project Grant award, valued at $651,674, supports fundamental research on the mechanics of elastogranular metamaterials. The researchers at Trustees of Boston University will investigate how the interplay between localized confinement, such as cohesion and packing geometry, and elastic instabilities in slender structures like beams, plates, and shells can enable advanced functionality. The specific objectives are to: (1) understand and control the postbuckling response of beams with bound grains; (2) determine the mechanical response of an elastogranular foam composite system; (3) design plates with tunable bending and stretching rigidity; and (4) create and characterize elastogranular shells with tunable compliance. This research aims to advance understanding of these complex elastogranular interactions and their applications in areas like sustainable architecture, engineered living materials, and mechanical metamaterials. The work will also include educational and public outreach components.
