This federal Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Office of International Science and Engineering (CFDA 47.079) will provide $1,262,948 to the University of Houston System to implement the first phase of the "ACCELNET: Growing Convergent Research to Advance Scientific Understanding and Applications of Coupled Brain Activity, Expressive Movement and Music" initiative. The goal is to establish a global network of industry and university research centers to accelerate interdisciplinary, convergent research on the neural mechanisms and applications of how music and dance affect brain function, creativity, and well-being. Key activities will include assaying, analyzing, and modeling coupled brain activity, movement, sound, and video data using AI, brain-computer interfaces, and computational methods. The project will also develop a global workforce training program, host workshops, and engage the public through art-science performances to foster collaboration across the humanities, science, and engineering. By the end of the 4-year implementation phase, the network will operate across cultural, disciplinary, and organizational boundaries to promote innovation and rapid translation of findings.
