This National Science Foundation (NSF) Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) Project Grant award of $202,212 to the West Virginia University Research Corporation will support a collaborative research project to resolve uncertainty in past carbon-14 (14C) spikes recorded in tree rings. The goal is to improve estimates of the timing, duration, and magnitude of past solar energetic particle events (SEPs), which pose risks to space-based infrastructure. The research team will use field experiments and modeling to quantify how different tree species and geographic locations affect the age of carbon allocated to wood and influence 14C measurements. This will help establish a better upper limit on the severity of extreme solar events, which is critical for space weather forecasting and risk assessment. The project period runs from October 1, 2024, to September 30, 2027, and involves early-career researchers, graduate and undergraduate students, and women principal investigators from EPSCoR states.
