The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $3,655,904 Project Grant under the Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) to Northern Illinois University to conduct the In-Situ Collaborative Experiment for the Collection of Hail in the Plains (ICECHIP) field campaign. This first-of-its-kind, 4-year study aims to improve radar detection and monitoring of hail, provide critical ground-truth data for materials science, and enhance the nation's capabilities to predict hailstorms and their impacts. The comprehensive field observations will use a variety of advanced instrumentation, including mobile radars, unmanned aerial systems, and laser scanning technologies, to investigate hailstone growth, fall behavior, and interactions with thunderstorm dynamics. Northern Illinois University will collaborate with The University of Alabama in Huntsville, which will provide support for deploying and maintaining field instrumentation and delivering data products. The ICECHIP project will train 32 undergraduate and 20 graduate students across 10 U.S. universities as part of its educational and workforce development efforts.
