This $200,000 federal Project Grant awarded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences (CFDA 47.049) program supports research by New York University (NYU) School of Medicine on the development of fluorinated protein engineered fibers and hydrogels for medical applications. The key objectives are: 1) generating coiled-coil fluorinated fibers for controlled drug delivery, 2) developing temperature-responsive fluorinated hydrogels, and 3) evaluating the potential of these fluorinated biomaterials as 19F magnetic resonance imaging agents. This interdisciplinary project aims to enhance the design of fluorinated protein-based biomaterials and enable the creation of innovative medical treatments that can be monitored non-invasively within the body. The award will also help train future scientists and engineers by involving students from multiple disciplines. There are no planned sub-awards under this grant, which has an ultimate completion date of August 31, 2027.
