This $300,000 Project Grant awarded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences (CFDA 47.049) program supports research to develop new adaptive optical technology critical to extending the astrophysical reach of gravitational-wave detectors and enabling future facilities. The main goal is to improve the sensitivity of gravitational-wave detectors by a significant factor, expanding their detection horizon past a redshift of 5 and enabling new tests of strong-field gravity, cosmology, and dense nuclear matter. This work is integral to realizing a planned upgrade of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO), known as A#, and will help lay the foundation for a next-generation U.S.-based gravitational-wave observatory, Cosmic Explorer. The award will be performed by the Regents of the University of California at Riverside, a prominent public research university, over the project period from Sep 1, 2024 to Aug 31, 2027.
