This $367,088 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Integrative Activities (IA) program will upgrade the Dark Sky Observatory (DSO) telescope at Appalachian State University. The upgrades will enhance the telescope's imaging and spectroscopic capabilities, enabling more varied observational and instrumentation projects for undergraduate astronomy students. Key improvements include a new high quantum efficiency CCD camera, fiber-optic bundle for the mini-echelle spectrograph, new imaging camera and filters, and an upgraded telescope control system. These modernizations will provide a platform for student-led monitoring campaigns, high-cadence observations, discovery follow-up, and large surveys. The award also enables a time-exchange program with the University of the Free State and Boyden Observatory in South Africa, as well as opening 10% of the telescope's spectroscopic queue to the broader astronomical community. The project will be executed from August 2024 through July 2026.
