This National Science Foundation (NSF) Mathematical and Physical Sciences (CFDA 47.049) project grant of $506,976 awarded to the Georgia State University Research Foundation Inc. will support research on supermassive black holes. The investigators will map the gas flows into and out of the centers of active galaxies hosting accreting supermassive black holes, leveraging advances in reverberation mapping data and the recently launched X-ray telescope XRISM. This work aims to constrain the geometry and kinematics of gas flows over a wide range of spatial scales, determine black hole masses and spins, and explore accretion and ejection mechanisms around these extreme objects. The large datasets collected will also provide numerous opportunities to train students at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and support public outreach efforts in the Atlanta area. No subawards are planned for this 3-year project, which begins on August 15, 2024.
