This Project Grant award of $199,998 from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) to Kennesaw State University Research And Service Foundation, Inc. (KSU R&SF) aims to develop perspective-taking skills in first-year engineering students using arts-based observation techniques. The research will explore how learning to analyze themes in art helps students approach engineering design problems from different viewpoints. The project involves first-year civil and environmental engineering students attending visual thinking strategy sessions at an on-campus art museum, followed by an engineering design problem. Measurement will include a perspective-taking scale, design approach assessment, and interviews to determine the influence of the arts-based observation on students' problem-solving. This work aligns with NSF's initiative to cultivate engineers capable of addressing diverse, complex challenges. The project will also deliver an interactive workshop and online resources to help faculty incorporate these arts-based techniques into engineering design courses.
