The University of Connecticut (UConn) was awarded a $570,000 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Mathematical and Physical Sciences (CFDA 47.049) program. The grant supports UConn's development of new methods for the precise synthesis of novel fluorinated polymeric materials with complex architectures, as well as exploration of the recycling and upcycling of commercial fluoropolymers. The 3-year project aims to overcome longstanding challenges in fluoropolymer synthesis and significantly expand the tools available for fluoro, organic, and polymer chemistry. The research will train undergraduate and graduate students, including those from underrepresented groups, in relevant synthetic and analytical techniques. The project is expected to have strong industrial impact and disseminate results broadly through scientific publications and conferences. No sub-awards are planned under this grant.
