The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $413,851 Project Grant under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences (CFDA 47.049) program to Case Western Reserve University to advance research on the use of magnetic nanostructures to address and couple defect spin qubits for quantum technology applications. The project aims to understand how magnetic nanostructures can provide strong, local, and controllable magnetic fields to enable addressing and coupling of nitrogen-vacancy center spin qubits in diamond without introducing excessive decoherence. The research will explore various magnetic materials and nanostructures, such as permalloy disks and artificial spin ice, to optimize the tradeoffs between qubit functionality and coherence. The findings are expected to enable new pathways for solid-state, room-temperature quantum technologies and train a diverse cohort of students for the quantum and semiconductor workforce. The award period runs from July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2027.
