The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $396,290 Project Grant under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences (CFDA 47.049) program to the University of Wisconsin-Madison for research on microstructural control in metal-free ring-opening metathesis polymerization. This 3-year project, led by Professor Andrew J. Boydston, aims to mechanistically investigate polymer structural control in this polymerization technique, which has applications in areas such as lightweight vehicles, ballistic protection, and 3D printing. The research will provide training for undergraduate and graduate students, enable collaborative activities with other researchers, and include outreach efforts to increase K-12 interest in science. This work has the potential to advance synthetic organic chemistry, polymer synthesis, and light-induced catalysis through a better understanding of the mechanisms governing polymer microstructure. No sub-awards are planned under this grant, which began on June 1, 2024 and is expected to be completed by May 31, 2027.
