The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $212,365 Project Grant under the Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) program to The University of Iowa for a project titled "DESIGNING STRUCTURE-PHENOTYPE QUERY-RETRIEVAL AND ANALYSIS SYSTEMS FOR MICROSCOPY-BASED WHOLE ORGANISM STUDIES". The project aims to develop algorithms and systems for integrated storage, querying, and analysis of complex structure-phenotype data generated from research studying the effects of molecular probes on whole organisms. The research will address challenges in representing, indexing, and analyzing these multidimensional datasets, with the goal of providing scientists working on basic and translational biological research new data management capabilities. The award also includes an educational component focused on attracting and training students, particularly women and underrepresented minorities, to work at the intersection of computer science, biology, and chemistry. The project will run from October 1, 2023 to September 30, 2024.
