This $265,971 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Integrative Activities (IA) program, with a period of performance from September 1, 2024 to August 31, 2027, supports research to advance the fundamental understanding of floating offshore wind (FOW) technology and its comprehensive environmental impacts.
The primary objectives are to: 1) Develop a novel high-fidelity simulation model for FOW turbine dynamics; 2) Characterize the individual and system-level performance of FOW under operational and extreme conditions; 3) Parameterize FOW farm layouts for optimal performance; 4) Model the local and regional climatic/oceanic impacts of large-scale FOW deployment; and 5) Leverage exascale computing to accelerate the high-fidelity modeling. The research findings will enable optimized planning and design of next-generation FOW systems, reduce lifecycle costs, and minimize environmental impacts. Louisiana State University (LSU) is the prime awardee and plans to involve subawardees in the project execution.
