This National Science Foundation (NSF) award under the STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) provides $596,142 to Purdue University to conduct a large-scale study examining how prompting learners to gesture during video-based statistics instruction may improve their understanding of statistical concepts and procedural knowledge. Using a mixed methods approach, the researchers will employ design-based methods to create video learning environments (VLEs) that incorporate instructional gestures, cue students to perform these gestures, and monitor and provide feedback on student gestures. Randomized control trials will be used to assess the impact of the VLE design on conceptual understanding, procedural knowledge, transfer of learning, and self-regulated learning. Case studies will also examine which gesture features effectively scaffold student learning and enhance transfer during online statistics instruction. The resulting VLEs and a design guide for educators will be made freely available on the project's website.
