The National Science Foundation awarded a $506,000 Project Grant to the Research Foundation of the City University of New York, operating as Queens College, to investigate the reactions of the radical cations of guanine and 8-oxoguanine with nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide. The 3-year project, funded through the NSF's Mathematical and Physical Sciences (CFDA 47.049) program, will use electrospray ionization and guided-ion beam tandem mass spectrometry to study these gas-phase reactions and gain a better understanding of DNA damage from oxidative, nitrosative, and nitrative stress. The research will provide training opportunities for students, especially those from underserved groups, and the instrumentation developed will also be used in undergraduate laboratory courses.
