The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $434,923 Project Grant to the University of Maine (UMaine) for the "REU SITE: SENSOR SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING" program, as part of the NSF STEM Education (CFDA 47.076) initiative. This 3-year program will provide research experiences for 10 undergraduate students per year, with half from institutions with limited undergraduate research opportunities and half from underrepresented groups in STEM fields. Students will conduct interdisciplinary research in sensor science and engineering, ranging from theoretical studies to the design, fabrication, and testing of prototype sensor devices with applications in medical, environmental, and industrial domains. Participants will work closely with faculty mentors, interact with graduate students and researchers, and disseminate their work through presentations, publications, and community outreach activities. The grant aims to motivate students to pursue graduate education and careers in research and development.
