This National Science Foundation (NSF) Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) Project Grant award in the amount of $398,266 provides funding to the Regents of the University of Minnesota to support the "Sustainable Land and Water Resources Research Experience for Undergraduates (SLAWR REU)." The project introduces undergraduate students to Earth systems science through a community-based research experience that honors Tribal communities. Students will conduct research at three sites, including two Native American communities, as part of a larger integrated research community. The REU program focuses on developing student skills in areas such as tribal research protocols, scientific communication, research ethics, and team science. Participants will produce research summaries, blog posts, story maps, and research posters that will be presented at conferences. The overarching goals are to increase participation of underrepresented students, facilitate novel discoveries through integration of multiple knowledges, and advance a culture of inclusivity within academia.
