The Pennsylvania State University, doing business as Penn State, was awarded a $599,096 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) Federal Grant Program (CFDA 47.070). The three-year award, effective June 1, 2024, will fund research towards "Efficient Adaptive Federated Learning: Algorithms, Theories, and Applications." The project aims to (1) improve the communication efficiency of adaptive federated learning systems through new algorithm designs and convergence guarantees, (2) enhance the training efficiency of adaptive federated learning under heterogeneous data distributions, and (3) develop and evaluate practical adaptive federated learning systems for applications like the Internet of Things and healthcare. This work is expected to advance the fields of machine learning, data mining, and related areas, while also supporting graduate/undergraduate student development and broader education in computing. No sub-awards are planned under this grant.
