This $174,867 National Science Foundation (NSF) Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) Federal Grant Program (CFDA 47.070) award to Wellesley College will fund a research project on "ALGORITHMIC FAIRNESS FOR COMPUTATIONAL SOCIAL CHOICE MODELS." The project aims to: 1) Formulate new computational problems, objectives, and constraints for implementing and evaluating voting systems that can guide future work in algorithmic fairness; 2) Design and analyze algorithms for these problems that can provide fairness guarantees; and 3) Prove impossibility results that establish which notions of fairness are incompatible or intractable. The project will advance knowledge in computational social choice and algorithmic fairness, with findings incorporated into computer science curricula and used to mentor underrepresented undergraduate students. The award period is from April 15, 2024 to March 31, 2026.
