This National Science Foundation (NSF) Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) Federal Grant Program (CFDA 47.070) Project Grant award of $174,927 to the San Diego State University Research Foundation will fund research to address challenges in the Ethereum peer-to-peer (P2P) network. The effort will develop methods to systematically detect incompatible communication protocols and inconsistent behaviors across Ethereum clients, as well as design a new approach to preserve node privacy and improve propagation efficiency. This work will involve three tasks: 1) developing an automated testing framework to discover incompatible communication protocols, 2) creating a differential fuzzing framework to detect inconsistent propagation behaviors, and 3) designing a dynamic propagation model to mitigate privacy leakage and enhance efficiency. The award period is from July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2026, and the results will also support the development of two new academic courses on cryptography and blockchain security foundations.
