The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $489,239 Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) Program grant to The Pennsylvania State University, doing business as Penn State, to develop cost-effective, high-throughput data storage solutions to support scientific research across disciplines including physics, astronomy, biology, and materials science. The 2-year project, titled "CC* DATA STORAGE: COST-EFFECTIVE ATTACHED STORAGE FOR HIGH THROUGHPUT COMPUTING USING HOMO-GENEOUS IT (CASH HIT) SUPPORTING PENN STATE SCIENCE, THE OPEN SCIENCE GRID AND LIGO", aims to provide 7.8 petabytes of storage, with 2.9 petabytes (37%) available to external research communities through the Open Science Grid and a new regional storage initiative for underserved Pennsylvania institutions. The project will also build workforce capabilities to leverage cost-effective, open-source storage solutions. No sub-awards are planned under this grant.
