This National Science Foundation (NSF) Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships (TIP) program (CFDA 47.084) Project Grant award of $550,000 to Northeastern University is for the development of compact, coherent hydrophone array systems for real-time, wide-area ocean acoustic monitoring. The project aims to translate the Passive Ocean Acoustic Waveguide Remote Sensing (POAWRS) technology, which uses advanced hydrophone arrays to provide continental-scale ocean sensing capabilities, into commercial products. Specifically, the award will fund the creation of two prototypes: a stationary 3D coherent hydrophone array system for wind farm installations, and a compact, towable 1D coherent hydrophone array for deployment on various ocean vessels. The project will also develop an in-house, multi-channel analog-to-digital converter system and enhance the POAWRS research software for commercialization. This technology has diverse applications in ocean environmental assessment, offshore hydrocarbon exploration, maritime security, and ecosystem monitoring. The award period is from April 1, 2024 to March 31, 2026.
