The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $197,047 Project Grant under the Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences (CFDA 47.075) program to the Regents of the University of Michigan to develop and analyze the Global Surveillance and Censorship Scores (GSCS) dataset. This 2-year award from September 2024 to August 2026 aims to advance the study of government surveillance and censorship tactics, both digital and physical, and how they relate to political repression and control. The project will utilize mixed methods to collate quantitative and qualitative historical and contemporary data on surveillance and censorship from human rights reports and other sources. The resulting GSCS dataset will allow researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to better understand the evolution of these tactics and their implications for national security, human rights, and foreign policy.
