The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $299,925 Early-Concept Grants for Exploratory Research (EAGER) grant under the NSF Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) to the University of Texas at Austin. The grant, titled "UTEAM: Underground Thermally Enhanced and Architected Metamaterials," aims to develop a novel, cost-effective, and easily deployable shallow geothermal heat exchanger (GHE) system. The research will integrate microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) to enhance soil thermal conductivity, and thermomechanical architected metamaterials (TAMS) to enable geometric phase transformations in response to temperature variations, in order to harvest geothermal energy. The project has four educational objectives: mentoring and training students, facilitating the retention of underrepresented minorities, developing integrated educational modules and dissemination, and establishing a USA-UK exchange program. The grant period is from September 1, 2024 to August 31, 2026.
