The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $206,021 Project Grant under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to Utah State University (USU) to conduct collaborative research on the evolution of elastic wave properties during the seismic cycle. The project aims to illuminate the processes associated with earthquake precursors in order to improve seismic hazard forecasting.
The research will use active source seismic interrogation techniques to study the mechanics of pre- and post-seismic deformation on dry and fluid-saturated meter-scale faults. The key goals are to: (A) explore whether robust variations in seismic wave properties can be identified before and/or after earthquakes, (B) determine the physical mechanisms responsible for such variations, and (C) assess the potential for operational forecasting of ruptures on meter-scale faults using machine learning analysis. The 3-year project period runs from July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2027.
