This National Science Foundation (NSF) Mathematical and Physical Sciences (CFDA 47.049) project grant awarded to Kent State University in the amount of $599,979 supports research on the hydrodynamics and electrokinetics of ferroelectric nematic liquid crystals. The project explores the fluid dynamics and electric field responsiveness of these newly discovered polarized liquid crystals, with the goal of advancing fundamental scientific understanding and enabling potential future applications in areas like microscale actuation and control. The research combines rheometry, advanced microscopy techniques, and other methods to investigate how the electric polarization of ferroelectric nematics behaves under shear flow and external electric fields. This work has broader significance in expanding knowledge of out-of-equilibrium phenomena in soft materials and in educating a diverse group of students in materials science, hydrodynamics, and related interdisciplinary fields. The grant was awarded on July 15, 2024 with a planned completion date of June 30, 2027. No subawards are planned under this grant.
