This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences (CFDA 47.075) program provides $202,504 to the Dominguez Hills Foundation at California State University, Dominguez Hills to conduct research on the implementation of the "Nordic Model" of incarceration in the United States. The research will examine how principles like human dignity, normalization, and resocialization have been translated for U.S. correctional settings, the goals and factors affecting implementation, and how these efforts are experienced by staff and incarcerated individuals. The project will use qualitative methods including observation, interviews, and analysis of archival documents across multiple study sites where the Nordic Model is being implemented. This research aims to increase scientific understanding of how correctional reform can be accomplished and sustained in carceral institutions. The award period is from June 15, 2024 to May 31, 2026.
