The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $598,628 Project Grant to the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum in Honolulu, Hawaii under the Biological Sciences (CFDA 47.074) program. The grant, titled "BIORETS: RESEARCH EXPERIENCES FOR ADVANCING CURRICULUM ON HAWAIIAN ECOSYSTEM SCIENCES (REACHES)," will support the training of eight high school and community college teachers from Hawaii's underserved schools each year for seven weeks during the summer and two weeks during the academic year from 2024 to 2026.

The goal is to deepen the teachers' science literacy and understanding of Hawaiian ecosystem sciences, particularly land snail ecology, conservation, and cultural values. This will enable the teachers to incorporate place-based authentic research experiences into their classroom curricula and engage a broader diversity of students, including Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander students. The project will also provide research opportunities for three undergraduate and one graduate student each fall semester to assist with implementing the research and curriculum. The University of Hawaii at Manoa will serve as a sub-grantee to support this aspect of the project.
