This $304,957 federal Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Mathematical and Physical Sciences (CFDA 47.049) program supports a 5-year research effort at Williams College to investigate the fundamental science behind the dynamics of fluid surfaces in constrained geometries. The research team will employ high-speed videography, microscopy, and digital image processing to quantify and gain new insights into the interplay between surface tension, viscosity, flow, and other physical principles governing phenomena such as fluid leaks, droplet formation, and particle interactions on fluid surfaces. This work has potential applications in diverse scientific fields and industries. The award also provides opportunities for dozens of undergraduate students to engage in cutting-edge research. No sub-awards are planned for this project.
