The University of Kansas Center for Research Inc. received a $482,550 National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER award under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences (CFDA 47.049) program. The 5-year project, led by Principal Investigator Mills, aims to investigate how supermassive black holes are fed and stars form in the innermost regions of nearby galaxies. The research team will use the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) and Very Large Array (VLA) telescopes to map cold gas and dust. To increase diversity, the project will establish the RAISE (Remote Astronomy Internship and Scholarship Experience) fellowship program to engage underrepresented minority undergraduate students in remote summer research and year-round mentoring. The project seeks to advance understanding of the activity cycles of low-luminosity active galactic nuclei and central starbursts through analysis of data from ALMA, VLA, and the James Webb Space Telescope.
