This National Science Foundation (NSF) Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) award of $395,706 to Arizona State University will explore how Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) support Latino engineering doctoral students over a 5-year period. The project will employ a multi-case study methodology to longitudinally examine the experiences of Latino engineering PhD students at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez and Arizona State University. It will leverage site coordinators at each institution to recruit first-year Latino engineering doctoral students and follow them for 4 years, while also conducting periodic interviews with graduate education stakeholders. The goal is to uncover connections between doctoral student experiences and institutional structures for "servingness" to identify best practices that HSIs can implement to better support Latino doctoral students. The award will also develop a scoresheet to help HSI leaders evaluate their institutional structures for serving this student population.
