This $276,237 National Science Foundation (NSF) Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) Project Grant awarded to Oregon State University will examine the precursory activity and evolution of the catastrophic eruption that formed Crater Lake, Oregon approximately 7,700 years ago. The research team will study the deposits from the smaller eruptions leading up to the main event to identify changes within the magma storage region that precipitated the large-scale eruption. This comprehensive multi-disciplinary analysis of the ash, pumice, and lava samples will track the chemistry and physical properties of the magmatic system over time, providing insights that can improve forecasting of major volcanic eruptions. In addition to training two PhD students, the project will engage community college students in a volcanic hazard simulation exercise and involve professionals to assess the long-term regional impacts of the eruption. The award period runs from August 1, 2024 to July 31, 2027.
