The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $383,172 Project Grant under the STEM Education (CFDA 47.076) program to the University of South Florida to develop and evaluate the use of adaptive learning platforms (ALPs) in five undergraduate engineering courses. The project aims to compare student cognitive and affective outcomes between courses using ALP-delivered adaptive pre-class lessons versus one-size-fits-all pre-class activities delivered through the learning management system (LMS). The research and development (R&D) effort will be conducted through a collaboration between engineering and education faculty at three institutions: the University of South Florida, the University of Central Florida, and the University of Pittsburgh. The project will analyze ALP analytics and student learning behaviors to study the relationships between prior knowledge, student preparedness, and educational outcomes. Findings and best practices will be disseminated through open educational materials, publications, and faculty workshops.
