This $482,474 Project Grant awarded by the National Science Foundation Division of Ocean Sciences (CFDA 47.050 - Geosciences) to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) will fund a 3-year study to conduct observing system simulation experiments (OSSEs) using advanced ocean biogeochemical models. The goal is to improve understanding of the potential for iron fertilization to sequester carbon in the Southern Ocean, Equatorial Pacific, and Northeast Pacific. The OSSEs will leverage high-resolution regional ocean models nested within global Earth system models to assess the effectiveness, carbon sequestration impacts, and ecosystem consequences of large-scale ocean iron fertilization as a carbon dioxide removal strategy. This work will provide critical insights to inform future field trials and the design of a global carbon observing network. WHOI, a private non-profit research institution, has extensive expertise in oceanography, climate research, and delivering modeling and analytical capabilities to federal agencies through grants and contracts.
