This National Science Foundation (NSF) Project Grant award, under the Engineering program (CFDA 47.041), provides $250,000 to Utah State University (USU) to demonstrate the use of wastewater monitoring as a tool for assessing air pollution exposure and associated non-communicable diseases in underserved communities. The project aims to link air pollution, urine biomarkers, and wastewater data to develop community-based disease surveillance methods utilizing wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) techniques. The research will focus on socioeconomically disadvantaged areas with higher air pollution burdens, validating pollution exposure through mass spectrometry and air sampling. The project involves co-generating knowledge with the environmental justice community, including high school outreach and public meetings to disseminate the findings. While targeting air pollution, the WBE approach has broader potential to monitor a variety of non-communicable diseases linked to environmental exposures. The award period is from July 2024 to June 2027.
