The University of Utah's Office of Sponsored Projects was awarded a $472,062 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) to upgrade their noble gas mass spectrometry laboratory. This equipment will enable the continued characterization of groundwater systems by more than 140 institutions that have previously utilized the laboratory's services. The upgraded mass spectrometry system will facilitate age dating of groundwater samples, as well as provenance studies and thermometry analysis, supporting hydrologic and geologic research. The award will enhance the university's capacity to partner with and train visiting scientists in the application of noble gas tracer techniques for understanding groundwater flow, contamination vulnerability, and resource sustainability. This project aims to promote a better understanding of groundwater systems in service of the United Nations' Millennium Development Goal of ensuring environmental sustainability and access to safe drinking water.
