The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $290,078 Project Grant under the Integrative Activities (CFDA 47.083) program to the Board of Regents of the University of Nebraska, doing business as the University of Nebraska, to conduct research on hydrogen flow in porous media for underground energy storage. The key objectives are to: (1) elucidate the hydrogen transport, storage, and loss in porous media during repetitive drainage-imbibition processes at the fundamental pore scale; and (2) upscale the repetitive hydrogen injection-extraction processes to reservoir-scale modeling. This research aims to advance the fundamental understanding of hydrogen migration in porous materials to enable the development of long-term, grid-scale energy storage technologies. The funding will support a fellowship for an assistant professor and a graduate student at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln to collaborate with scientists at Idaho National Laboratory on this project. No sub-awards are planned under this grant. The award period is from January 1, 2024 to December 31, 2025.
