The National Science Foundation (NSF) Directorate for Engineering awarded a $610,609 Project Grant under the Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) to the University of California, Merced, a minority-serving and Hispanic-serving educational institution. The grant, titled "Collaborative Research: Elevating Farm Worker-Robot Collaborations in Agri-Food Ecosystems", aims to shape the future farm workplace by developing intelligent agricultural robots that can operate in seamless partnership with farmworkers to improve tree-crop harvesting outcomes and enhance the productivity of food production processes. The project brings together experts from engineering, computer science, social science, environmental science, and crop production management to discover new principles for co-designing agricultural robotics and automation technology validated by future farmworkers and farm owners. The key products and services to be delivered include novel actuation and perception mechanisms for safe and reliable robotic harvesters, effective machine vision to understand farmworker activities, efficient robot planning cognizant of human activities, participatory design approaches for precision farming technology trust and adoption, and advancements in human-robot multitasking for sustainable agriculture. The project aims to increase trust and adoption of future precision farming technologies while shedding light on the implications of agricultural robotics on the future agriculture workforce.
