The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $519,526 Project Grant under its Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049) to Texas Tech University System, a Hispanic Serving Institution, to develop new mathematical models and computational software for studying how modifiable risk factors like diet, exercise, and sleep impact the progression of Alzheimer's disease. The project aims to: 1) devise novel network dynamical systems models to describe the evolution of Alzheimer's protein pathology in the presence of factors like insulin homeostasis, oxidative stress, and neuroinflammation; 2) construct software based on high-performance libraries to instantiate and solve these complex models; and 3) analyze the models using techniques from differential equations, networks, and data science to understand how altering modifiable risk factors can mitigate Alzheimer's disease risk. This research seeks to provide high-level public health recommendations for delaying Alzheimer's disease through lifestyle interventions and will also support graduate student training. The grant period runs from August 15, 2023 to July 31, 2026.
